With a collection of great talents like Donald Lawrence, Makeba Riddick, BeBe Winans, Mannie Fresh and Claude Kelly there has got to be a cup overflowing with good info, right? Well you are definitely right, if you thought it would be a rich blessing. What a great experienced listening to the some of the most successful songwriters past few decades. If you missed it, you missed a truly candid walk through the start of writing, all the way the development of a full song
Some of the most moving and memorable quotes were from Be Be Winans and Donald Lawrence. They described song writing as a combination of personal experience and vision, which can be written in 2nd person to encourage the listener. From a song like "Hold up the Light" with Whitney Houston, a song can hold and caress the world in times that a warm inspiring song was needed. In some instances a song could be a kick or jolt to a world in trouble, and a bridge to a society in need of inspiration to change.
My opinion is that we don't need to the fall away from songs the inspire the spirit, and have meaning. Sure, there is room for a song the will move a room of people to dance without much real purpose other than fun. But, for a song that lasts in our hearts and minds, it takes a song that comes from deep within and speaks what is so hard to say to people one on one. Songs that speak to the soul, become timeless in our hearts and ultimately become the fabric of our nation.
